Written for the 2026–27 winter break. The dates change each year; the planning advice doesn't.
Christmas dog boarding in Orange County is usually imagined as a few nights around December 25. The 2026–27 school calendars say otherwise. Irvine Unified, Newport-Mesa (Costa Mesa), Capistrano Unified and Santa Ana Unified all have students out from Monday, December 21, 2026 through Friday, January 1, 2027, back in class Monday, January 4. A family that leaves the weekend school lets out and returns the weekend before it resumes needs fourteen nights of care, not four. Out in Wildomar it's longer still.

Two weeks is a different booking from a long weekend. It fills a sitter's calendar for the whole holiday, it crosses the platform's holiday-rate window, and it's long enough that the cancellation terms and the medication supply matter. Here are the district dates, a timeline that works back from them, and the platform rules to read before you confirm.
Winter Break 2026, District by District
The published 2026–27 calendars, with the days that matter for a dog sitter:
- Irvine Unified: Winter Recess Dec. 21 through Jan. 1 for both traditional and year-round students (IUSD 2026–27 calendar).
- Capistrano Unified (San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point, San Clemente and nearby cities): Friday, Dec. 18 is a K–12 pupil-free day, Winter Recess is Dec. 21–Jan. 1, and school resumes Jan. 4 (CUSD calendar, board approved April 22, 2026). Effectively a 17-day break.
- Newport-Mesa Unified (Costa Mesa and Newport Beach): Winter Recess Dec. 21–Jan. 1; Dec. 18 is a 2-hour early release for TK–6 and a non-student day for grades 7–12 (NMUSD 2026–27 calendar, approved Jan. 20, 2026).
- Santa Ana Unified: Winter Break Dec. 21–Jan. 1, modified days Dec. 15–18, first day of spring instruction Jan. 4 (SAUSD 2026–27 academic calendar).
- Lake Elsinore Unified, out in Wildomar: the posted calendar shows no-school days Dec. 21–23, district holidays Dec. 24–Jan. 1, an intersession week Jan. 4–8, then a teacher work day and a professional-development day Jan. 11–12. Regular classes don't resume until Wednesday, Jan. 13 (LEUSD 2026–27 calendar). Its PDF still carries a placeholder on the approval line, so check the district page before you book.
The practical shape: an Irvine or Costa Mesa family can leave Saturday, Dec. 19 and come back Sunday, Jan. 3; a Capistrano family can leave Thursday night, Dec. 17. Send the nights you'll actually be gone, travel days included.
When to Book Christmas Dog Boarding in Orange County
Independent sitters who board in their own homes generally care for smaller groups than commercial facilities do, and a sitter who takes one dog for Dec. 19 to Jan. 3 has that spot filled for every night of the holidays, so two-week requests close calendars faster than the Christmas-only and New Year's-only requests that arrive in December.
Working back from a Dec. 19 departure:
- Now through mid-November: Shortlist two or three sitters whose calendars show the full stretch open. Booking on The Blue Sock is request-based, so the sitter confirms your dates; it isn't an instant checkout (how the request flow works).
- Before Thanksgiving week (by Nov. 20): Have the booking confirmed, four weeks ahead of drop-off. If your dog is also boarding for Thanksgiving, make both requests now.
- Early December: Hold the meet & greet for a first stay, confirm vaccinations stay current through Jan. 3, and ask your vet about a refill for any prescription that runs out mid-stay.
- After Dec. 15: Still possible, but you'll be choosing from whoever has a two-week gap left, with no room for an introduction.

How the Winter Holiday Rate and the Seven-Night Cap Work
Sitters on The Blue Sock set their own prices, including whether they charge more over the holidays. A sitter can set a separate holiday nightly rate; some do and some don't. The platform's holiday calendar marks Winter Holidays as Dec. 24, 2026 through Jan. 3, 2027, and the stay date picker flags those dates with a small dot when you choose your nights.
Three details decide what a two-week stay costs:
- Overlap is counted by night, not by date. Dropping off Dec. 21 and picking up the morning of Dec. 24 doesn't touch the window. Staying the night of Dec. 24 does.
- One holiday night makes the whole stay a holiday stay, priced at the sitter's holiday rate for every dog, every night, up to a cap.
- The cap is seven nights. Every night beyond seven is billed at the sitter's normal rate. So a fourteen-night winter-break stay with a sitter who charges a holiday rate is seven nights at the holiday rate and seven at base, and that blended figure is the one to compare across sitters. A holiday rate is never lower than the sitter's normal rate.
For the base rates, use the county bands in our Orange County dog boarding cost guide: in-home boarding runs $50–$85 per night, so fourteen nights is $700–$1,190 before any holiday rate. The platform service fee is tiered by booking size under the published Service Fees Policy: 11% up to $400, 9% from $400.01 to $800, and 7% above $800, capped at $125. A two-week stay almost always lands in the 9% or 7% tier, one small advantage of booking the whole break as a single request instead of two.
Cancellation Terms Are Real Money on Fourteen Nights
Each sitter chooses a full-refund window from the platform's published options, and the policy for your stay is shown with your booking in the Pet Parent Portal. You get 100% of the booking amount back if you cancel by the end of the sitter's 1-, 3- or 7-day window, 50% after that until 11:59 p.m. the day before, and nothing on the start date. The service fee is non-refundable except at the platform's discretion; premium add-ons chosen at booking are refunded in full whenever you cancel, unless they've already been provided.
The gap between a 1-day and a 7-day window is a rounding error on two nights. On fourteen holiday nights it can be several hundred dollars, so treat the window as part of the decision if your travel might shift.
Plan the other end too. Care past your scheduled pickup is billed as extended care under each sitter's own terms, charged automatically to the card on file without prior approval. Agree in advance what a Jan. 4 arrival looks like instead of Jan. 3. Our long-term boarding guide covers the rest of the two-week questions, including who can authorize a vet visit while you're unreachable and what happens if the sitter can't finish the stay.

A Sitter's Home Is Celebrating Too: What to Put in Writing
If your dog boards in a private home over Christmas, that home probably has a tree, a dinner and guests. The ASPCA's holiday safety guidance is the list to work from:
- Tinsel: "Ingested tinsel can cause severe vomiting, obstructed digestive tract, dehydration and could even require surgery."
- Tree water "is a breeding ground for bacteria," so it should be covered or out of reach.
- Mistletoe and holly can cause gastrointestinal upset and cardiovascular problems; poinsettias cause milder stomach irritation.
- Houseguests' medication belongs "in a closed cabinet rather than a bag or suitcase."
- New Year's Eve noise: fireworks, poppers and noisemakers scare many dogs; the ASPCA advises a quiet interior room to retreat to.
On food, the ASPCA's people-foods list covers the holiday table: baking chocolate and cocoa powder carry the highest risk of any chocolate, xylitol can cause low blood sugar and liver damage, grapes and raisins can lead to kidney damage, and raw yeast dough can bloat and twist the stomach. Write down your dog's food rules, your vet's number and the ASPCA Animal Poison Control line, (888) 426-4435, and send them with the booking (pre-boarding checklist).
Two weeks is also long enough for a dog to need something to do. Many Blue Sock sitters list optional premium experiences such as a Sniffari nature walk or a Cuddle & Movie Night; offerings vary by sitter, so check each profile and ask at the meet & greet.
Frequently Asked Questions
How far ahead should I book Christmas dog boarding in Orange County?
Have it confirmed before Thanksgiving week, by about Nov. 20, 2026. Irvine, Costa Mesa, Capistrano and Santa Ana schools are out Dec. 21 through Jan. 1, so many families need the full two weeks, and two-week requests fill holiday calendars faster than weekend ones.
Does the holiday rate apply to all fourteen nights?
No. On The Blue Sock, if a sitter has set a holiday rate and any night of your stay falls in the Winter Holidays window (Dec. 24 through Jan. 3), the holiday rate applies to the stay, but the platform caps holiday-rate nights at seven. The remaining nights are billed at the sitter's normal rate. Sitters with no holiday rate charge their normal rate throughout.
Is a stay that ends on Christmas Eve a holiday booking?
Not if you pick up on the morning of Dec. 24. Overlap is counted by the nights you pay for, so a stay whose last night is Dec. 23 doesn't touch the window. If your dog stays the night of Dec. 24, it does.
What if my return flight is delayed past New Year's?
Care past your scheduled pickup is billed as extended care under the sitter's own terms and charged automatically. Tell your sitter the real risk before you leave, agree on what a one-day delay looks like, and pack a refill's worth of any medication so a late return doesn't become a missed dose.
Send the Winter-Break Request While December Is Still Open
By mid-December some sitter will still have a free night around Christmas. What runs out first is the sitter who has all fourteen open, whose cancellation window fits your travel risk, and who has time to meet your dog before the stay. Browse sitters near you, compare Home Environment, Care Style and each sitter's holiday pricing against the dates your district actually gives you, and send the request before Thanksgiving week.
