Thanksgiving Dog Boarding in Orange County: Book by Mid-October for the Week of Nov. 23

Thanksgiving is Thursday, November 26 this year, but for many Orange County families the trip starts days earlier. Irvine Unified and Capistrano Unified both have students out the entire week of November 23, so a family leaving for the holiday may need anywhere from four to nine nights of care rather than a long weekend. That changes how Thanksgiving dog boarding in Orange County works: the sitter calendars that fill first are the ones covering the whole week, not just Thursday.

Late September is early, and that's the point. Here's what the school calendars actually say, when to send a request, and the two platform rules (holiday rates and cancellation windows) worth reading before you confirm.

Thanksgiving Week, District by District

The break isn't the same length across the county. The published 2026–27 district calendars:

  • Irvine Unified: Thanksgiving Recess Nov. 23–27, the full week (IUSD calendar).
  • Capistrano Unified (San Juan Capistrano, Dana Point, San Clemente and nearby cities): Fall Recess Nov. 23–25, then Thanksgiving holidays Nov. 26–27; school resumes Monday, Nov. 30 (CUSD calendar).
  • Newport-Mesa Unified (Costa Mesa and Newport Beach): Thanksgiving Recess Nov. 25–27, Wednesday through Friday (NMUSD calendar).
  • Out in Wildomar, Lake Elsinore Unified lists Thanksgiving Day (Nov. 26) and Friday, Nov. 27 as holidays (LEUSD calendar).

The practical upshot: an Irvine or San Juan Capistrano family can leave Saturday, Nov. 21 and be back Sunday, Nov. 29. That's eight nights. A Costa Mesa family is more likely to need Tuesday night through Sunday. If you're sending a request, send the dates you'll actually need, including the travel day on each end.

When to Book Thanksgiving Dog Boarding in Orange County

Independent sitters who board in their own homes generally care for smaller groups than commercial boarding facilities do, and a sitter who takes one family's dog for the whole week has that spot filled for every night of it. Week-long requests use up holiday calendars much faster than weekend ones.

A workable timeline for a Thanksgiving trip:

  • Late September to early October (now): Compare profiles while most calendars are open, and shortlist two or three sitters, not one. Booking on The Blue Sock is request-based: the sitter confirms your dates, so it isn't an instant checkout.
  • By mid-October: Have a confirmed booking, especially for a stay of five or more nights or if your dog has never stayed with the sitter.
  • Early November: Hold the meet & greet if you haven't, and check that vaccinations stay current through your return date. Our vaccine requirements guide covers which ones sitters commonly ask about and how long each takes to count.
  • Thanksgiving week itself: Possible, but you'll be choosing from whoever is left, with no time for an introduction.

If Thanksgiving is one trip in a busy travel year, our vacation dog care guide walks through the broader choice between boarding, in-home sitting and drop-ins.

How Holiday Rates Work on The Blue Sock

Sitters set their own prices, and that includes whether they charge more for holidays. On The Blue Sock, a sitter can set a separate holiday nightly rate. Some do and some don't; when one applies, it appears as its own holiday-rate line in the booking's price breakdown. The platform's holiday calendar marks Thanksgiving weekend, from Thanksgiving Day through the following Sunday.

The detail most people miss: if any night of your stay falls inside that window, the sitter's holiday rate applies to the stay as a whole, not only to Thursday, up to a platform cap on the number of holiday-rate nights. A holiday rate never goes below the sitter's normal rate. So an eight-night Irvine school-break trip that touches Thanksgiving weekend is priced differently from one that ends Wednesday. Compare the full quote for your exact dates, not just the headline nightly number. For typical rates across the county, see our Orange County dog boarding cost guide.

Check the Cancellation Window Before You Confirm

Holiday plans change: flights move, relatives get sick. Each sitter picks a full-refund window from the platform's published options, and it appears on their profile:

  • 100% refund if you cancel by the end of the sitter's window: 1, 3, or 7 days before the stay.
  • 50% refund after that, up to 11:59 p.m. the day before the stay starts.
  • No refund for a cancellation on the start date.

That 100% covers the booking amount. The platform service fee is non-refundable except at the platform's discretion. On a two-night stay the difference between a 1-day and a 7-day window is small; on an eight-night holiday booking it's real money. If your travel might shift, count the window as part of your decision, not as fine print.

Build a buffer at the other end, too. Holiday flights run late, and care past your scheduled pickup window is billed as extended care. Agree with your sitter ahead of time what happens if you land a day late. Our guide to long-term dog boarding covers week-plus stays in more depth, including medication supply and who can authorize a vet visit while you're unreachable.

Holiday Food: What to Tell Your Sitter

If your dog stays in a sitter's home over the holiday, that home may be cooking a Thanksgiving dinner too. According to the ASPCA's Thanksgiving safety guidance, the main risks are:

  • Poultry bones are a choking hazard, and raw or undercooked turkey can carry salmonella.
  • Onions and garlic, common in stuffing and casseroles, can be toxic to pets.
  • Desserts sweetened with xylitol can cause low blood sugar, liver damage or death.
  • Raw yeast dough can expand in the stomach and produce alcohol as it ferments.

Put your dog's food rules in writing: no table scraps, which treats are fine, and your vet's number. Add the ASPCA Animal Poison Control line, (888) 426-4435. Our pre-boarding checklist is a good template. Many Blue Sock sitters also list premium experiences such as a Cuddle & Movie Night or a Sniffari nature walk, which can make a quieter holiday evening for a dog who's missing home. Offerings vary by sitter, so check each profile.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far ahead should I book Thanksgiving dog boarding in Orange County?

Aim to have it confirmed by mid-October, and earlier for a stay of five or more nights. Irvine and Capistrano schools are out the whole week of Nov. 23, so week-long requests fill holiday calendars quickly.

Does holiday pricing apply to my whole stay or just Thanksgiving Day?

On The Blue Sock, if a sitter has set a holiday rate and any night of your stay falls in the Thanksgiving holiday window (Thanksgiving Day through the following Sunday), the holiday rate applies to the stay as a whole, up to a cap on holiday-rate nights. Sitters who haven't set a holiday rate charge their normal rate.

What if my plans change after I book?

Refunds follow the sitter's chosen cancellation window: 100% of the booking amount inside a 1-, 3- or 7-day window, 50% after it until the night before, and nothing on the start date. The service fee is non-refundable except at the platform's discretion.

Can a first-time dog still board over Thanksgiving?

Yes, but give yourself room for a meet & greet in early November. A first stay goes better when the dog has met the sitter and the routine has been talked through, and that's hard to schedule during Thanksgiving week itself.

Get Your Thanksgiving Request In Now

Some sitter will probably still have a Thanksgiving opening in mid-November. By then, though, you may not get the right home for your dog for eight nights, the cancellation window your plans need, or time for an introduction. Browse sitters near you, compare Home Environment, Care Style and each sitter's cancellation window against the dates your family actually needs, and send the request while late-November calendars are still open.
